Amy Dowell
Program Coordinator
Amy Dowell joined IUHPFL in November 2015 as the Program Coordinator. Born and raised in Monteverde, Costa Rica, Amy moved to the US to go to high school when she was 15, leaving her American parents behind (except for visits!). Ever since 1986, Bloomington has been her home base, largely because her aunt (a now-retired IU professor) lives here, although Amy has also lived in Ohio, Colorado, and Florida.
Amy attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. While at Earlham, she majored in Peace & Global Studies, played varsity soccer, studied German, and attended the 6-month study abroad program in Austria and Germany before graduating in 1993. After a few years, she returned to school and obtained her Master’s degree in Conflict Analysis & Resolution from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
After grad school, Amy returned to Bloomington, and worked for 6 years as the Executive Director of a local non-profit organization, the Community Justice & Mediation Center. After leaving CJAM, Amy had an administrative position with Indiana University in the Chemistry Department. With IUHPFL, Amy is excited to be able to incorporate her varied skills and experiences into the position. She believes the experience of traveling, adapting to new places, and learning a foreign language can be positive and transformative experiences in young person’s life.
In her free time, Amy enjoys photography, genealogy research, gardening, and hiking in the many beautiful parks and state forests in South Central Indiana and beyond.
