Last fall, the determination of which programs to offer for Summer 2022 was informed by the ongoing prevalence of the pandemic around the globe. At that time, parts of Asia and Latin America were still experiencing a higher number of cases than most of Europe, which led us to limit our programming to our sites in Austria, France, and Spain.
We are grateful that we were able to relaunch this past summer in six of our European host cities and we are pleased with the success of our collective endeavors. However, after two years of cancellations in 2020 and 2021 and a smaller than usual array of programs in 2022, we must now choose to recover gradually and strategically by limiting the number of programs we offer for Summer 2023 and placing students only in our European sites. Therefore, sadly, we will not be able to offer programming in China or Japan, or to those students wishing to study Spanish in Chile or Mexico this next summer.
The 60-year journey of the IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages has been exciting, rewarding, and sometimes challenging, as we collaborate with our partners in Indiana and abroad to navigate an ever-changing global landscape. As we look toward the future, it is our desire to expand programming in all our languages and in varied locations around the globe, and to continually finetune our efforts to provide an authentic language and culture immersion experience for our participants.
We are also looking toward Summer 2024 for our return to Asia and Latin America. In the meantime, our sights are set on our European cities for Summer 2023, and we are now welcoming registrations from French, German, and Spanish students from across Indiana.
We are honored to be sharing this journey with you.
Kind regards,
Loni Marie Dishong, IUHPFL Managing Director
