What to know before starting the FAFSA:
- The FAFSA takes time to fill out, so it's important to complete it as soon as the student receives acceptance status in January.
- Even though applicants must complete the FAFSA, they will not actually receive federal financial aid.
- IUHPFL uses the SAI code from the FAFSA as an indicator of financial need for the disbursement of its own scholarships, thereby avoiding the need to collect extensive personal data from applicants.
Even if the student is nota senior, complete the FAFSA as if he or she will be graduating from high school this year and attending college in the fall. The FAFSA is designed to help determine financial need and aid for college students.
Complete the FAFSA at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa and enter the following information:
- College grade level: First year undergraduate (Freshman)
- High school completion status: High school diploma
- School code: Indiana University 001809
- Preparer questions: choose “NO” — you are not a preparer
- You will reach a page titled “Sign and Submit.” You must sign and submit to receive your SAI.
- After signing and submitting, you should see a "Congratulations, the FAFSA Form Is Complete!" page. It should include the Student's Name, Completion Date, Data Release Number, and Estimated SAI near the top of the page (see example below)
- Print (or save as PDF) or take a screenshot/picture of this screen to upload to the IUHPFL Financial Assistance Application. Don't worry! If you happen to close the page without printing/snapping a picture, you should receive an email with the same information (Student Name, Completion Date, Data Release Number, and Estimated SAI, with no additional personal information). You can save/print to PDF and submit this email instead.
