At the airport, we were basically strangers, but that certainly changed during our five weeks together. We started our journey at a pool where we started finding out about each other in German. Once in Graz, we met our host families and before we knew it, we were busy with our courses. As the students became comfortable communicating only in German, we were able to see their personalities. Those personalities shined during our daily adventures, which included places like the Stadtpark, Schloss Eggenberg, and climbing the 260 steps to the Uhrturm to ride down the huge slide.

Here, we realized that we were truly a team: We supported and cheered for each other, both during the program and as we prepared to depart.

We were blessed with excursions to Burg Hochosterwitz, Wörthersee, Riegersburg, and the Zotter Chocolate Factory. We had so much fun getting to know Graz, the surrounding area, and each other. Our time in Graz ended with a memorable Farewell Show. Here, we realized that we were truly a team: We supported and cheered for each other, both during the program and as we prepared to depart.

Leaving Graz was difficult. The students felt so loved by their host families and were comfortable in their new city. After many tears, we boarded the bus to Vienna and enjoyed our last days together. We saw many sites, including Schönbrunn, Stephan’s Cathedral, and the Prater. Most importantly, we got to spend time with those once strangers who were now friends. When we said goodbye in Chicago, we were sad, but for such happy reasons: We are left with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.
