IUHPFL Hiatus
Dear IUHPFL Community,
I am writing to you not just as colleagues and partners, but as members of the IUHPFL family who have played an essential role in its story.
After much thought, consultation, and deliberation, I have made the difficult decision to place the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL) on hiatus. This decision was not made lightly.
IUHPFL is a program that holds deep significance for me personally, and I know it is equally important to our alumni, high school teachers, program instructors, and the staff of IU Education Abroad. For decades, it has provided transformative experiences for high school students, fostering language proficiency, intercultural understanding, and personal growth.
In recent years, however, enrollments have steadily declined despite the tireless efforts of our IUHPFL staff to recruit, promote, and adapt. This trend, along with the changing needs and interests of today’s high school students and the shifting landscape of international education, makes it essential that we take the time to carefully consider how IUHPFL should be structured for the future.
We do not yet have a set timeline for this hiatus. Our priority is to ensure that any decisions about the program’s future are made thoughtfully and with the best interests of our students and stakeholders in mind.
I extend my sincere gratitude for your commitment to and belief in the mission of IUHPFL. Your support and dedication over the years have been vital to its success. While this pause is difficult, I hope you share my pride in the countless students whose lives have been enriched through this program and in the lasting impact IUHPFL continues to have through its alumni around the world.
