Please review the following answers to common questions about the application process. If you still have a question, please contact us.
Frequently Asked Questions
Students who meet eligibility requirements will receive an email titled "IUHPFL Invitation to Apply" within two business days of paying the registration fee. The link to the application portal is included in the email. Make sure to check spam folders. If it has been longer than two business days, please contact us at iuhpfl@iu.edu and we will ensure that you receive a response right away.
Students will also receive an email if there are any concerns about their eligibility.
Note: The link to the application portal is only sent to students because students are required to complete the personal application on their own.
Please review the step-by-step instructions on our Registration page. If you still experience issues with the registration process, please email iuhpfl@iu.edu with information about the error and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
In Parchment, choose "send to individual" or "send to email address" and then enter the email address for our office (iuhpfl@iu.edu).
Please send an email to iuhpfl@iu.edu with the name of the original appraiser and your request to replace them with a new appraiser. Once we delete the original request form in the Student Portal, you will be able to submit a new appraisal request.
On the same day that IUHPFL sends the student an “Invitation to Apply” email, we send their language teacher an email notifying them that their student has been invited to apply. The Writing Sample Worksheet is attached to that email. If your teacher can’t find that email in their Inbox, let us know and we will resend it right away.
With the Registration form students are letting us know that they are interested in applying for IUHPFL. The Registration process includes two steps (to be completed by November 15):
- Online Registration Form
- Registration Fee Payment
Based on the information in the Registration Form, IUHPFL staff determine if a student meets the basic eligibility requirements for IUHFPL. If a student is eligible, we send the student a link to their online Student Application Portal.
The full Application includes seven components:
- Personal Application
- Parental Assessment
- Language Teacher Appraisal
- Other Teacher Appraisal
- Other Adult Appraisal
- School Transcript
- Writing Sample in Target Language
All of the application components are due by the December deadline. For the parts that must be completed by someone besides the student, the student has to initiate that process by sending a Request through the Application Portal.
Students do not receive academic credit for participating in IUHPFL. While abroad, students take courses in linguistics, culture, literature, communication, and grammar with experienced instructors. However, IUHPFL is not accredited and its participants are not officially enrolled at Indiana University, nor are they students of a foreign institution. That being said, we have found that our alumni typically place into the 5th semester of their target language in college, which saves them tuition expenses and the time of taking lower level courses.
