Program Fees for the five or six-week program include all course-related fees, host family stays, and program-related excursions. Not included in Program Fees: Airfare to and from the host country plus personal expenses and some meals during international travel or extended excursions. Please note that some group flights depart from Chicago and that travel to and from the group departure airport is not included.

Miscellaneous fees include registration fee at the beginning of the program cycle, passport application fees, travel to and from possible interviews and mandatory Student-Guardian Orientation, as well as potential postage for certain acceptance forms. While participation in IUHPFL is a significant investment, the program is priced much more competitively than most international and even U.S. foreign language summer programs. This is possible because Indiana University is committed to making IUHPFL as affordable as possible for students and, for that reason, manages its resources efficiently while offering aid to those who need financial assistance to take advantage of this unique opportunity. It is IUHPFL’s goal to continue to improve the quality of IUHPFL year after year and give as much funding to its students as possible.
Based on its self-funded model and effort to provide students as much financial support as possible, IUHPFL is able to offer the highest quality program at a lower rate than other study abroad programs.
Program Fees are due in four installations: the first installation is made upon acceptance into IUHPFL, in February of the travel year. At this point, students incur two immediate expenses, the initial program fees deposit and airfare deposit, to secure their slot as a participant. The complete payment schedule can be reviewed below and in the Student Checklist.
- A non-refundable initial payment of $500 toward Program Fees. This initial payment contributes towards the upfront costs of deposits made for accommodations onsite.
- A $500 airfare deposit towards round-trip group flights. For the students' safety and security, and also for the logistical ease of the program, we require that all students traveling to the same site must fly together on the same group flights to and from the host country.

Program Fees will be paid to Indiana University Accounts Receivable while Airfare will be paid to Travel Leaders.
Accepted students who have not paid the balance in full by the last payment deadline, will not be able to participate in the program.
Financial Assistance is available for students applying to IUHPFL. Financial Assistance through IUHPFL is provided in the form of a reduction in program fees that is reflected on student invoices, not a loan that needs to be repaid. Awards typically range between $250 and $1,500, therefore it is necessary for applicants to have additional funding sources to pay for airfare and remaining program fees.
Financial assistance for IUHPFL applicants is distributed based upon individual family need and varies in amount.
Even though IUHPFL uses a tool to figure the expected family contribution, the office determines the need for financial assistance based solely on the pool of program applicants. Over the past two program cycles, on average, over 60 percent of students who applied for Financial Assistance received it.

IUHPFL strives to provide detailed information about financing the program for its participants as it understands the significant financial commitment the program requires. Many students use one or more ways to raise funds to help offset the cost of the program. Withdrawal Before the Program Begins
If a student withdraws from the program for any reason other than critical illness or emergency before departure, a refund of Program Fees will be calculated based on the following schedule:
- Before March 1, all but the $500 non-refundable deposit is refundable
- Before April 1, all but $1,000 is refundable
- Before May 1, all but $2,000 is refundable
- On or after May 1, program fees are 100% non-refundable (with rare exceptions)
Withdrawal from the program is only considered effective on the date that written notification is received by IUHPFL.
Withdrawal After the Program Begins (i.e. While Abroad)
If students withdraw from the program after it begins, they must send a formal and detailed statement to IUHPFL explaining the reasons.
IUHPFL will consider a partial refund of fees only 1) if a student becomes seriously ill or 2) if an emergency requires the return to the U.S. In these cases, the amount of the refund will be determined individually on the basis of costs recoverable by the program at the time of withdrawal.
Please note that withdrawal after the program begins (i.e., while onsite) assumes that students will have to change the date of their return ticket home and such a change in airfare will result in additional costs. Also, please note that if students withdraw while onsite, the airlines will work with the student as best they can to get the participant home in a timely manner. Availability to change return flights may be limited due to airline policies regarding group flights.
Expulsion from the Program
If a student is expelled from the program, no fees or costs will be refunded. Students will also be expected to cover the additional expenses incurred related to the necessary arrangements to change the return flight home.
